Battalion History

Formed in 1881 as a regular battalion from 28th Regiment of Foot.   Full Title - 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.
On declaration of war, battalion was stationed at Bordon as part of 3rd Infantry Brigade, 1st Division.   Arrived in France on 12th August 1914.   Served in France and Flanders throughout the war.
Battle Honours - 31, earned at:   France and Flanders 1914 - 1915, Mons, Retreat from Mons, Marne 1914, Aisne 1914, Ypres 1914 and 1917, Langemarck 1914, Gheluvelt, Nonne Boschen, Givenchy 1914, Aubers, Loos, Somme 1916 and 1918, Albert 1916, Bazentin, Pozieres, Flers-Courcelette, Morval, Arras 1918, Messines 1917, Passchendaele, Lys, Estaires, Bethune, Drocourt-Queant, Hindenburg Line, Epehy, St Quentin Canal, Beaurevoir, Selle, Sambre.
After the war, battalion posted to Cologne for Occupation and Garrison duties then to Ireland in December 1920.
