PERRY, Leslie Harold

Second Lieutenant, MC.   Attached to 2/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry.   Killed in action in France on 5th October 1918.   Buried in Croix-du-Bac British Cemetery, Steenwerck.   Aged 19.

 

PETERS, Gerard

Second Lieutenant.   1/6th Battalion.   Died of illness in France on 24th February 1917.   Buried in Fouquescourt British Cemetery.   Aged 25.

 

PHELPS, Leslie James

Second Lieutenant.   8th Battalion.   Died of wounds in UK on 3rd November 1918.   Buried in Treorchy Cemetery.   Aged 29.

Leslie James PHELPS was born at Porth, Rhondda Valley, South Wales in 1889.   His father, Mr James Phelps was the under manager of the Fernhill Colliery near Treherbert in the Rhondda.

He enlisted into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers as a Private soldier, number 75565, in 1917 and was granted a commission in the Gloucestershire Regiment on 25th June 1918.   After training he was posted for service with 8th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in France.

On Sunday 20th October 1918 he was serving with the unit when it was stationed west of the River Selle near Haussy.   The unit was ordered to advance and capture the high ground to the east of the River.   The attack was successful although the unit did lose some men including 2Lt Phelps who was wounded by shrapnel.  

He was evacuated along the Army Medical Services chain to the UK where he was eventually admitted to the Sir John Ellerman's Hospital, Regents Park, London.   He died on 3rd November 1918 of the wounds he received at Haussy.   He was buried in Treorchy Cemetery on  7th November 1918 in the Willis family grave, the resting place of his father in law and mother in law.

Second Lieutenant.   Seconded to 45th Squadron Royal Flying Corps.   Killed in aerial action over Belgium on 27th October 1917.   Commemorated on Arras Flying Services Memorial.   Aged 18.

 

PHILLIPS, Gwilym

Second Lieutenant.   Attached to 1/8th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.   Killed in action in France on 13th October 1918.   Buried in Romeries Communal Cemetery Extension.   Aged 22.

 

PHILLPOTTS, Fitzroy Charles

Lieutenant.   7th Battalion.   Died of wounds in Gallipoli on 9th August 1915.   Commemorated on the Helles Memorial.   Aged 21.

 

PHIPPEN, Henry George

Lieutenant.   1/4th Battalion.   Died of wounds in France on 9th November 1916.   Buried in Becourt Military Cemetery.   Aged 24.

 

PICKERING, Tom

Second Lieutenant.   7th Battalion.   Died of illness in Egypt on 1st November 1915.   Buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military Cemetery.   Aged 22.

 

POLACK, Ernest Emanuel

Lieutenant.   1/4th Battalion.   Killed in action in France on 17th July 1916.   Buried in Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuile.   Aged 23.

 

POLLOCK, Sydney Geoffrey

Lieutenant.   Retired List.   Died of illness in UK on 19th November 1918.   Buried in North Sheen Cemetery, London.   Aged 23.

Sydney Geoffrey POLLOCK was born at Pembroke, South Wales in 1895.   His parents, Colonel Evelyn Pollock, CBE, RA, and Mrs Mary Pollock, of 40 Gledstanes Road, Hammersmith, later resided at Villa Desiree, Guethary, Pyrenees, France.

He was educated at Harrow School between 1909 and 1911 was attending the School of Mines, London when war was declared.   He volunteered for service and was commissioned into the Gloucestershire Regiment on 4th September 1914, being posted for training to the 8th Battalion.

After a winter on Salisbury Plain he was diagnosed with TB of the knee, and on 8th April 1915, just after he was promoted to Lieutenant, was invalided out of the Army and awarded a Silver War Badge.   He then spent two and a half years on crutches and underwent three operations.   In February 1918, he returned to the School of Mines and died of pneumonia, following influenza, at Guy's Hospital, London, on 19th November 1918.   His death was announced in The Times published on Wednesday 20th November 1918, under "Fallen Officers".

He was buried at North Sheen Cemetery, Plot CC.176 on 22nd November 1918.   He was 23 years of age.

His brother, Lt George Henry Pollock, South Staffordshire Regiment, died of wounds on 18th June 1915 whilst serving with 1st Battalion Warwickshire Regiment in the Ypres area, and is buried in the Hospital Farm Cemetery, Ypres.

Lieutenant (Acting Captain), MiD.   Seconded to Cambridge University.   Died of illness in UK on 23rd November 1918.   Buried in Clevedon (St Andrew’s) Churchyard.   Aged 25.

 

POPE, Howard John

Second Lieutenant.   Retired List.   Died of illness in UK on 4th March 1919.   Buried in Bristol (Canford) Cemetery.   Aged 29.

 

PRATT, Ralph Lewis

Captain.   2/4th Battalion.   Killed in action in France on 18th October 1916.   Buried in Pont-du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue.   Aged 41.

 

PRESTON, John Alex Stanley

Lieutenant.   2nd Battalion.   Died of wounds in Salonika on 7th October 1916.   Buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery.   Aged 38.

 

PRICHARD, Edgar Albert

Major.   Territorial Force Reserve.   Died of illness in UK on 29th February 1916.   Buried in Bristol Cathedral Burial Ground.   Aged 55.

 

PRIESTLEY, Charles Lacey

Captain.   1st Battalion.   Died of wounds in Belgium on 11th November 1917.   Buried in Oxford Road Cemetery, south of Wieltje.   Aged 20.

PRITCHETT, Walter Penrose
