Memorials To The Missing - France

120 officers of the Gloucestershire Regiment are commemorated on 9 Memorials To The Missing in France

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission was established by Royal Charter in 1917.   Its duties are to mark and maintain the graves of the members of the forces of the Commonwealth who were killed in the two World Wars, to build memorials to those who have no known grave and to keep records and registers, including, after the Second World War, a record of the Civilian War Dead.   14 Memorials were built in France to commemorate those of the Great War who have no known grave, but on only 9 are officers of the Gloucestershire Regiment commemorated.

Notes:

1.   Although 2Lt Arnot (Tyne Cot Memorial) was killed in the Holnon Wood area on 22nd March 1918, CWGC have rejected my representations for him to be correctly commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial stating that " ...... CWGC acknowledges that some errors have been made with regard to the selection of location for commemoration for those with no known grave ....... However, it is not now appropriate to seek to correct such errors by moving casualties between Memorials, particularly when relatives have become familiar with the current place for commemoration".
