Cheltonians Commemorated On

Memorials To The Missing In France

329 Cheltonians are commemorated on 15 Memorials To The Missing in France

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission was established by Royal Charter in 1917.   Its duties are to mark and maintain the graves of the members of the forces of the Commonwealth who were killed in the two World Wars, to build memorials to those who have no known grave and to keep records and registers, including, after the Second World War, a record of the Civilian War Dead.   The 14 memorials built in France to commemorate those of the Great War who have no known grave are:

La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial   Commemorates nearly 4,000 missing officers and soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force who died in August, September and early October 1914.

Le Touret Memorial   Commemorates over 13,000 missing officers and soldiers of the British forces who fell in the fighting from October 1914 until 24th September 1915 - thereafter the missing in this area are commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

Loos Memorial   Commemorates over 20,000 missing officers and soldiers of the British forces who fell in this area from the first day of the Battle of Loos on 25th September 1915 to the Armistice in November 1918.

Thiepval Memorial   Commemorates more than 72,000 missing officers and soldiers of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died on the Somme battlefields before 20th March 1918 .  Most were killed between July and November 1916.

Arras Memorial   Commemorates almost 35,000 missing officers and soldiers from the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand forces who died in the Arras sector between the Spring of 1916 and 7th August 1918.

Cambrai Memorial   Commemorates more than 7,000 missing officers and soldiers of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Battle of Cambrai in November and December 1917.

Pozieres Memorial   Commemorates over 14,000 missing officers and soldiers of the British and South African forces who died on the Somme battlefields between 21 March and 7 August 1918.  Most are from March and April.

Vis-en-Artois Memorial   Commemorates over 9,000 missing officers and soldiers of the United Kingdom and South African forces who fell in 1918 in the final allied advances in Picardy, on the Hindenburg Line, the River Selle and in the Artois region.

Soissons Memorial   Commemorates almost 4,000 missing officers and soldiers of the British forces who died during the Battles of the Aisne and the Marne during May to August 1918.

Arras Flying Services Memorial   Commemorates nearly 1,000 airmen of the Royal Naval Air Service, the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force who were killed on the whole Western Front and who have no known grave.

Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial    Commemorates over 1,200 missing New Zealand Division soldiers who died in the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

Neuve Chapelle Memorial   The Indian national memorial to over 4,700 missing officers and soldiers of the Indian Army who were killed on the whole Western Front.

Villers-Bretonneux Memorial   The Australian national memorial erected to commemorate all Australian soldiers who fought in France and Belgium during the First World War, to their dead, and especially to those of the dead whose graves are not known.  The 10,700 Australian servicemen actually named on the memorial died in the battlefields of the Somme, Arras, the German advance of 1918 and the Advance to Victory, August to November 1918.

Vimy Memorial   The Canadian national memorial to all Canadians who served their country in battle during the First World War, and particularly to the 60,000 who gave their lives in France.  It also bears the names of 11,000 Canadian servicemen who died in France - many of them in the fight for Vimy Ridge - who have no known grave.

Salta Memorial.   The memorial in Plot 62 of St Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, marks the graves of 24 casualties from the hospital ship 'Salta' and her patrol boat, sunk by a mine on 10 April 1917. The memorial also commemorates by name the soldiers, nurses and merchant seamen lost from the 'Salta' whose bodies were not recovered, and those lost in the sinking of the hospital ship 'Galeka' (mined on 28 October 1916) and the transport ship 'Normandy' (torpedoed on 25 January 1918), whose graves are not known.

(The Ploegsteert Memorial sited in the Berks Cemetery Extension near the Belgian village of Ploegsteert commemorates more than 11,000 officers and soldiers of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in this sector during the First World War and have no known grave. The memorial serves the area from the line Caestre-Dranoutre-Warneton to the north, to Haverskerque-Estaires-Fournes to the south, including the French areas of Hazebrouck, Merville, Bailleul and Armentieres and the Forest of Nieppe.   Details of Cheltonians listed on this memorial can be see here).
