Roll of Honour - Cheltenham in the Great War

Roll of Honour - Cheltenham in the Great War

Their Name Liveth For Evermore

"He died for freedom and honour" - Engraved on the Memorial Plaque

After John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields" was published in 1915 the poppy became the international symbol for the remembrance of soldiers who died in battle.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The Cross of Sacrifice at Cheltenham Cemetery

The central focus of many cemeteries, both civilian and war, is the Cross of Sacrifice, designed by Blomfield to represent the faith of the majority, which ranges in height between 4.5m and 9m depending on the size of the cemetery.

The following pages list in alphabetical order the 1611 souls of Cheltenham and surrounding area  who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War and who are commemorated on War Memorials in the area:

Analysis and Summary

Also included, separately, are those locals known to have been killed or died in the Great War but who are not, for whatever reason, commemorated on any local memorial or roll of honour.

This Roll of Honour lists Regimental/Service particulars and death details.   (Compiled from The Book, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, "Officers and Soldiers Died in the Great War" and our own investigations).   A full list of Army Regiments and Corps in the British Army in 1918 can be viewed here.
